KEY QUALIFICATIONS

I have been a senior engineer, specialising in design of structures. I was responsible for the design of several double storey houses, large steel structures, School forums and a shopping mall in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. Through this design work I am fully conversant with various structural design codes of South Africa. Other diverse work has included the detailed structural design of a new regional hospital in Soweto and the extensions to a Vanadium Processing Plant.

2004 to date
Structural Engineer for Tuiniqua Consulting Engineers working on the following projects:

2001 to 2004
Resident engineer for Africon on the construction of a 2 km long pipeline and the construction of a 1 mega litre water reservoir for the Buffelsjag prison at Buffelsjag.(value ± $ 0.3m).
Site manager for Africon at the Beaufort West - and Swellendam weighbridge site's. Responsible for site supervision, finance control, site administration, meeting procedures and contact between Africon and client.
1998 to 2000
Bridge Engineer and Resident Engineer with Africon on the repair of flood damaged trunk road 33/4 at Meiringspoort (Value ± $10m). Responsible for all bridge work and structural work, most of which was destroyed on site. This project is environmentally sensitive in one of South Africa's declared National Monuments. Also responsible for the upgrading of the rest areas.

Won the IMPUMELELO innovations award 2001. This award is one of the annual awards for innovative, dedicated work in the fields of poverty reduction and community development.
1996 to 1997
Senior Resident Engineer with Africon for the construction of a Road-over-Rail Bridge (labour intensive), and approaches - Road K25 at Ga-Rankuwa - for North West Province. (Value $3m).

This project included foundations by caissons for this 4 span bridge traversing three very busy railway lines by means of precast beams and an in-situ deck as well as associated roadworks and intersections with cement stabilised gravel subbase (water bound macadam base and asphalt surfacing.)

Also responsible for a Materials Technician and his team, inclusive of the initiation and final evaluation of test results

Won the SAICE award for community-based projects.
1993 to 1996
Senior bridge engineer with Africon responsible for diverse projects which have included:
  • Capturing of bridge data for 2 000 bridges for the Bridge Management System of the Department of Transport.
  • Inspection of about 250 bridges for maintenance purposes for the Greater Johannesburg City Council.
  • Inspection of several bridges in Lesotho.
  • Design of pre-fabricated steel bridges for the emergency opening of Roads Programme in Mozambique.
  • Design of storm water drainage structures and related road structures for the Maseru Bypass in Lesotho.
  • Design of hydraulic structure underneath the Samrand interchange in Midrand, SA.
  • Design of various low level bridge crossings for a labour intensive project in the Ciskei.
  • Condition assessment and reporting of over 60 reinforced and pre-stressed concrete road bridges for the Transvaal Roads Branch, RSA.
  • Detailed design of all reinforced concrete works for the extensions to the Rhombus Vanadium Processing Plant near Brits, RSA.
  • Detailed design of all reinforced concrete structure for the proposed new 2 000 bed Soweto Hospital.
1989 to 1993
Bridge Engineer with VWL (now Africon) responsible for the design of miscellaneous new bridges and associated in-situ road drainage structures which included:
  • 2 in-situ arch shaped culverts on a road upgrading project near Sudwana, Mpumalanga. (Value $0,3m).
  • A 1.2 km long in-situ concrete drainage culvert as part of a stormwater management system in Meadowlands, near Soweto. (Value $3.2m).
  • A new 3-span simply supported reinforced concrete deck bridge across the Natalspruit on the proposed N17 dual carriageway road near Brakpan.
  • A new 3-span simply supported reinforced concrete road over River Bridge as part of the dualling of London Road in Sandton. (Value $1.2m).
  • Various low water/low cost road bridges and vented fords, as part of the rehabilitation/upgrading of tertiary gravel roads in Lebowa, RSA.
  • Modification and extension of Bridge B444 on London Road across the N3 freeway near Johannesburg inclusive of new retaining walls, abutments and culvert protection for a 1,2m dia high pressure water main, belonging to the Rand Water Board.
1989
Drainage Engineer with VWL's (now Africon) Transportation Division responsible for the hydraulic design of a storm water management system, for roads P160-2 and K16 between Rustenburg and Pretoria. (Project Value $109m).
1988
Design Engineer with Heerema Services, Leiden in The Netherlands. Duties included:
  • Computer analysis and design of various secondary structures required for the installation of off-shore oil and gas production platforms.
  • Assistance to the senior Field Engineer during construction of an off-shore oil and gas production platform, aboard Heerema's Crane Vessel, the Hermod.
  • Preparation of Topographical survey data for marine surveys.
1983 to 1987
Engineer with Koninklijke Wegenbouw Stevin, The Netherlands. Various duties included:
  • Construction supervision of all civil related works regarding the construction of several oil drilling sites.
  • Line surveys for the construction of new roads.
  • Construction supervision of the construction of a new asphalt paved road inclusive of quality control at the asphalt plant.
  • Construction supervision of a new 1.2 km sewerage system with the necessary house connections.
1982
Field Engineer's assistant carrying out miscellaneous condition and Topographical surveys on various road projects with the Department of Roads, The Netherlands.
